Family Expectations | New Sims 4 Family Gameplay Mod
Every parent wants something for their child. With this new mod Family Expectations it will let those hopes, demands, disappointments, and pressures actually shape the family!
Every parent can have their own expectations for each of their children.
Maybe they care deeply about school. Maybe they expect their child to have an impressive career, get married, give them grandchildren, or become wealthy. Maybe they barely care at all.
And just as importantly, you decide what kind of parent they are when their child doesn't live up to those expectations.
A supportive mother might be disappointed but still encourage her child. A harsh father might make sure they know exactly how badly they messed up. One parent might be thrilled about a promotion while another thinks their child should have achieved it years ago.
Over time, those reactions begin to matter. Parents can become proud, disappointed, distant, or deeply devoted to their children. Children can begin to feel pressured by one parent while feeling completely comfortable around the other.
In larger families, one child may even quietly become the Golden Child, while another becomes the one who never seems to measure up.
Getting Started

Click your active Sim and go to: Actions → Family Expectations.
A parent can select one of their children and decide what they expect from them. A child who is a teen or older can select one of their parents and see what they believe that parent expects from them.
If a Sim is both a parent and a child, you'll first be asked which side of the family you want to manage. Family-related conversations also appear under their own Family Expectations menu when clicking another Sim.
Choose What Parents Expect
There are five areas a parent can care about: Education, Career Success, Marriage, Children, and Financial Success.
Expectations are completely separate for every parent and child. A mother might expect her oldest child to have a successful career but be much more relaxed with her youngest. Their father might care more about marriage and grandchildren. Neither parent has to want the same things.
How Important Is It?
Level
Meaning:
Does Not Matter: The parent genuinely does not care about this area and will not react to it.
Would Prefer It: A mild hope. They would like to see it happen, but it is not a major expectation.
Considers It Important: Success and setbacks now matter to them.
Strongly Expects It: This is something the parent seriously expects their child to achieve.
Non-Negotiable: Failure is not really an option. Success can even increase pressure instead of relieving it.
What Kind of Parent Are They?
Expectations determine what a parent wants. Their reaction style determines how they handle disappointment.
Harsh
Critical
Even-Handed
Supportive
Unconditional
A harsh parent takes bad news much harder. A supportive parent can still be disappointed but responds much more gently. An unconditional parent can privately wish things had gone differently without putting nearly as much of that disappointment onto their child.
Don't Want to Set Everything Yourself?
Use Suggest. The mod looks at the parent’s traits and aspiration and suggests expectations that fit them.
Bookworm and Genius can push Education higher.
Ambitious and Overachiever can push Career Success higher.
Loyal can push Marriage higher.
Family-Oriented can push Children higher.
Materialistic can push Financial Success higher.
Hates Children pushes Children lower.
Commitment Issues pushes Marriage lower.
Around 30 aspirations can influence suggestions too, and they can stack with traits. If you own Growing Together, existing family dynamics can also influence the suggestion. It is still only a suggestion change anything you want afterwards.
Parents React to Your Sim's Life
Once expectations are set, the system mostly runs on its own. There are 20 different life events parents can react to.
Career: promotions, demotions, getting fired, getting laid off, and smaller early-career promotions.
Education: grades improving, grades falling, and smaller academic improvements.
Relationships: getting engaged, calling off an engagement, getting married, getting divorced, and becoming soulmates.
Children: having or adopting a first child, and having or adopting more children later.
Money: reaching §50,000, §250,000, and §1,000,000.
Each event has its own reactions and moodlets. Because every parent has their own expectations and personality, the same event can land completely differently in different families.
Who Actually Hears About It?

If the parent lives with the child, they always hear about it.
If the parent lives somewhere else, they need at least 15 friendship with the child. At 15 or higher, they can still hear about major things happening in the child’s life. Below 15, they hear nothing.
A dead parent does not react, even as a ghost. A paused parent also does not react.
Not Every Setback Is Treated the Same
The mod also considers whether something was actually the child’s fault. Getting fired is treated as a serious personal failure. A divorce or broken engagement is treated more gently. Being laid off is treated much more sympathetically because it may have had nothing to do with the child at all.
A layoff only carries around 25% of the usual blame, so even a very demanding parent should react more softly to a layoff than to being fired.
Small Progress Still Matters
Going from an F to a D or C is progress, but it is not the same as reaching a B or A. The same applies to the first few levels of a career. Supportive and Even-Handed parents may acknowledge those smaller improvements, while Critical and Harsh parents usually stay quiet.
Once a grade reaches B or A, or a career reaches around level 6 or higher, it counts as real news and parents who care about that area react normally.
Money Works a Little Differently
Financial milestones only count when the parent and child live in different households. The three milestones are §50,000, §250,000, and §1,000,000, and each is reacted to once per parent.
Parents Have Opinions About Who You Marry

The mod checks the parent’s relationship with the new spouse. If their relationship is below −20, the parent does not like them and the wedding gets a colder reaction. If they have never met the spouse, there is a different reaction for that too.
Approval
Parents slowly build an overall opinion of how their child is doing. Approval goes from −100 to +100.
Parent’s View
−100 to −61 = Estranged
−60 to −21 = Disappointed
−20 to +19 = Neutral
+20 to +59 = Proud
+60 to +100 = Devoted
A major setback can move approval much faster with a harsh and demanding parent than it would with a supportive one.
So the same child can be Proud in one parent's eyes and Disappointed in the other's.
Pressure
Children carry their own side of the relationship too.
Pressure runs from 0 to 100 and is tracked separately for every parent.
How the Child Feels
0–24 = No noticeable pressure
25–49 = Aware of it
50–74 = Weighed Down
75–100 = Crushed
At 50+, the child can receive a pressure moodlet. At 75+, they become Crushed, and the moodlet can tell you which expectation is weighing on them the most. One relationship does not cancel out another: a child can be at 80 pressure with Dad and 10 with Mom.

Success Usually Relieves Pressure
Normally, doing what your parent wants helps. The child feels like they proved themselves and some pressure comes down. The exception is Non-Negotiable: at that level, success raises the bar instead of satisfying the parent.
Some Children Handle Pressure Better Than Others
Perfectionist, Ambitious, and Gloomy Sims tend to take disappointment harder. Self-Assured, Goofball, and Independent Sims are more likely to brush some of it off. The effect is intentionally small around 3 pressure points either way.
If you own Parenthood, a child with 60+ Emotional Control also handles pressure slightly better.
Being Close Can Make Disappointment Hurt More
At 50+ friendship, disappointing that parent can add a little more pressure. Sometimes the opinion that hurts the most is the opinion you actually care about.
Being Expected to Do Everything Adds Up
When a parent has several areas set to Strongly Expects It or Non-Negotiable, setbacks become more stressful. Each additional demanding area can add a little extra pressure, up to +8.
Pressure Fades Over Time
After the last change, nothing happens for the first 12 Sim hours. After that, pressure falls by roughly 10 points per Sim day. Every new reaction resets that quiet period.
Parents can use Ease My Expectations, and children can Push Back, to bring pressure down faster. With paused relationships they do not lose pressure until you unpause it yourself.
Siblings
Golden Child & Black Sheep
You never assign these manually. They appear when one parent begins treating their children very differently.
One child has at least +40 approval.
Another has −20 approval or lower.
There are at least 60 approval points between them.
When all three are true, one sibling becomes the Golden Child and the other becomes the Black Sheep. If the gap closes again, both labels disappear. It is tracked separately for each parent.

Family Conversations
There are 22 family interactions under the Family Expectations menu. Sims never start these automatically you decide when the conversation happens.
Parents can tell a child what they expect, praise them, express disappointment, encourage them, ease their expectations, apologize for pushing too hard, compare siblings, ask about their love life, discuss suitable partners, and ask them to reconsider their partner.
Children can ask what their parent expects, ask whether their parent is proud, push back, discuss their future, ask to be trusted, say the pressure is too much, insist they can make their own choices, ask to stop being compared, and defend their romantic choices.

How the conversation goes depends on that particular family. A supportive parent may actually listen. A harsh one may dismiss the child completely. Each interaction has different possible outcomes, and after using one with the same pair there is a 3 Sim hour cooldown.

Storyteller Tools
For players who would rather create the story themselves, the mod also includes Storyteller Tools.
Set Parent View: manually change approval.
Set Child Feelings: manually change pressure.
Set Expectations: give all five areas the same level at once.
Set Their Reaction: change what kind of parent they are.
Make Event Happen: trigger one of 17 life events manually and let every parent react.
Exact Values: see the actual approval and pressure numbers.
Pause Changes Here / for This Sim / for This Household: freeze automatic changes.
Forget This Pair: completely reset everything Family Expectations knows about that parent and child.
While something is paused, there are no automatic reactions, pressure does not fade, approval does not change, and family labels stay where they are. Your manually chosen conversations still work.

Languages
Every language slot is filled, so players should not see blank text just because their game uses another language. For now, the mod itself is written in English, other-language games will show the English text instead of missing strings. Translations are welcome.
Compatibility
This mod adds new things. It does not replace anything the game already has, which is where most mod conflicts come from.
Lumpinou's Mods and Other Family/Relationship Mods
There are no known direct conflicts.
Family Expectations uses its own moodlets, labels, and systems rather than replacing the ones used by other mods.
Career, School, Trait, and Aspiration Mods
These should work normally.
Family Expectations mainly cares that something happened, such as a promotion or grade change. So it does not usually does not matter whether that came from EA gameplay or another mod.
SimRealist SNB
Compatible, with one limitation.
Financial expectations only look at normal household funds.
Money stored in an SNB bank account does not count toward the milestones:
§50,000
§250,000
§1,000,000
Things That Can Could Problems:
Two Copies of the Mod
Always delete the old version before updating.
Having two copies installed can cause duplicated menus, reactions, or other strange behavior.
Another Mod Stops a Game Event
Family Expectations can only react to events the game actually reports.
If another mod prevents something like a promotion from being recognized normally, Family Expectations may not hear about it either.
Very Full Sim Menus
If you use a lot of interaction mods, your Sim menus may become crowded.
Family Expectations keeps its interactions inside its own menu to help with this, but a long menu by itself is not a conflict
(Experiencing issues or just want to share a suggestion? Please use this form)
Adding It to Existing Saves
Nothing happens to a family until you actually set expectations for them. Removing Family Expectations will not delete your Sims, families, money, careers, or normal relationships.
If you uninstall it, continue playing, and then save the game without the mod installed, the mod’s own family settings may be lost. If you are only temporarily removing it for testing, keep a backup save.

Possible Asked Questions
I can’t find Family Expectations.
Make sure both files are installed, the script is no more than one folder deep, Script Mods are enabled, and Lot 51 Core is installed. Then click your active Sim and go to Actions → Family Expectations.
I set expectations and nothing happened.
Check whether the parent cares about that area. If they live in another household, they also need at least 15 friendship with the child. Below 15, they receive no news and do not react.
Only one parent reacted.
The other parent may not care about that area, may have less than 15 friendship while living elsewhere, may be dead or paused, or may consider the event too minor to comment on.
My Sim got a C and nobody said anything.
A C is smaller progress. Supportive or Even-Handed parents may comment; Critical and Harsh parents usually will not. B or A counts as major enough for everyone who cares about Education to react.
My Sim is rich but their parents have not noticed.
Money only counts when parent and child live in different households. The milestones are §50,000, §250,000, and §1,000,000, and each parent reacts to each milestone once.
Pressure is not going down.
Pressure needs 12 quiet Sim hours after the most recent change before it starts fading. After that it drops by around 10 points per Sim day. Every new reaction resets the waiting period.
My child succeeded and pressure went up.
That expectation is set to Non-Negotiable. At that level, success raises the bar instead of satisfying the parent.
Nobody has Golden Child or Black Sheep.
You need one child at +40 approval or higher, another at −20 or lower, and at least a 60-point difference between them for the same parent.
There is no approval label.
Anything between −20 and +19 intentionally has no label. That is the neutral range.
No conversations are showing up.
Most need at least one expectation set. Some also need a particular expectation level, romantic situation, pressure amount, or sibling dynamic. Interactions have a 3 Sim hour cooldown per pair.
A moodlet will not disappear.
Most Family Expectations moodlets last around 8–12 Sim hours and wear off on their own.
The child’s screen is missing expectations I set as the parent.
That is intentional. The child only sees expectations they have actually learned about through asking, being told, or hearing a reaction.
Can teens use the mod?
Yes. Children participate from teen and older. Elders can be parents normally. Step-parents are supported. Dead parents stop reacting. Pets are not included.
